After finishing in second place overall in the regular season, the Gauchos earned a spot in the regional championships. With their loss to SDSU at the state championship, UCSB had their competition cut out for them during nationals. Throughout the entire competition, Gaucho fans had a nail-biting uneasiness. The UCSB college men fell short within their events, and the fate of the team rested on the final heat with the girls. The lady Gauchos dominated the Women's Final as Lipoa Kahaleuahi and Rachel Harris earned first and second place, giving UCSB a victory over their rivals SDSU and a 14-point lead over CSUSM. Other standouts include Cole Robbins who won the College Longboard final and Kevin Osborne who followed closely with second place. Surf Team captain, Colin Andersen, said winning nationals was not only a long awaited victory to a competitive season, but a personal goal as well. "My brother was captain in 2004, and my ultimate goal for my time here at UCSB was to win nationals as captain," Colin said. "When it came down to the final heat with the girls, I knew we had a chance. We ended the day with a shoulder ride on the beach. Winning nationals was the perfect end to the season."
