How do I join a sport club team?
First, you should contact the team’s captain or coach and discuss joining the respective team with him/her. Contact information can found on the individual team pages. If you choose to join, you must register, complete your physical clearance form, and pay team dues.
Do you have to pay to play?
Yes, because UCSB Sport Clubs receives NO funding from the University, the teams are mostly self-funded. Depending on what sport you choose to play, team dues can cost anywhere from $30 to $1000. See the individual sport club team that you are interested in for the actual club dues amount.
Do I need to know how to play the sport?
You do not need to know how to play the sport of the team you wish to join- "No Experience Necessary!" However, depending on the sport, if you wish to compete on the traveling/varsity/’A' team, experience is most likely necessary. For example, if you wish to play a highly popular sport like club soccer, you will need previous experience with the sport in order to make the traveling team. Other teams, like water ski and wakeboard or fencing require little to no experience at all. See the team you are interested in joining for more specific information about necessary experience.
What is the difference between Sport Clubs and Intercollegiate Athletics?
Intercollegiate Athletic teams are University funded and therefore, the athletes do not have to pay team dues or fees at all. Many athletes on these teams have athletic scholarships whereas Sport Club athletes do not have that opportunity (because of funding). Hundreds of employees work for the benefit of IC athletes, and only a few employees work for Sport Clubs, hence why the teams are student run. Therefore, the main difference between ICA and Sport Clubs is the amount of school funding received by each department.
