Student Athletic Training Internship

Athletic Training is a unique profession in the field of sports medicine which involves attending sporting events as a first responder and following up with the athlete’s injuries and progress. Athletic Trainers specialize in the prevention, recognition, management and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries. UCSB Recreational Sports offers an Athletic Training internship under supervision of Certified Head Trainer, Rob Wang. Together he and his interns serve all 22 Sport Club teams.

  • Interns act as a first responder on the field to evaluate and treat injuries. The structure of the program allows for follow up with rehabilitation of the injuries in the training room.
  • Opportunity to see a wide range of injuries & mechanisms to which they occur. Including everything from dislocations, torn ligaments, broken bones, avulsions & more!
  • Gain experience working alongside others with a common interest in the field of sports medicine.

All students will attend weekly inservice meetings in a classroom setting with other interns of the same level in the program. The Head Athletic Trainer who will teach a concept and a skill leads these meetings. After a chance for hands on application during training room hours the following week, the skill will be assessed. Skills begin with basic application of heat & ice, use of ultrasound, electric stimulation, taping and general first aid. Progression to evaluation & treatment of ankle, knee, hip and shoulder injuries begin towards the end of the first year. Because the program starts at a basic level, there is no experience necessary and all majors are welcome! CPR and First Aid is required shortly after acceptance into the program, and basic anatomy is recommended within the first year.

Year 1: Beginner Level

  • Minimum of 4 hours/week of volunteer time in the training room
  • Attend 1st year in-services 1 hour/week
  • Begin game coverage to show responsibility and dedication

Year 2: Intermediate Level

  • Minimum of 4-6 hours/week
  • Attend 2nd year in-services 1 hour/week
  • Team assignment to one of the Sport Club Teams
  • Game/ Tournament Coverage
  • Required to assist with 1st year in-services
  • Required to complete 150 supervised hours

Year 3 & 4: Advanced Level

  • Minimum of 6-10 hours per week
  • Attend advanced in-services 1hour/week
  • Team assignment to one or more of the Club Sports Teams
  • Required to assist lower level in-services
  • Administrative responsibilities
  • Required to complete 300 supervised hour
