Outdoor Soccer Team to Watch: Real Meat
Written by Niko DeMourdant
Real Meat, pronounced “Me”-“at,” is one of UCSB’s many Intramural outdoor soccer teams. What separates Real Meat from other Intramural Sport teams is the team’s commitment to the game, to the competition, and to their success.
Real Meat has formed a real chemistry in their time together as a team. As a result, this team plays a superior game compared to many of the other Intramural teams. Last season, the team reached the Intramural Sport finals before losing the game in penalty kicks. They intend to go one step further this year and win it all.
Real Meat is comprised mostly of young men from the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Because of the Fraternity connections, Real Meat is able to last as a team even though the roster changes from quarter to quarter. “Our players change every season, but we are able to keep a good core and the team name since most of our players are in Sig Ep,” Charlie Le Moullac said.
Charlie Le Moullac, a second-year, plays left midfielder for Real Meat and has been with the team since last year. Le Moullac not only plays with Real Meat, but also plays for another Intramural soccer team as well as playing Intramural basketball.
“Intramurals is a great way to get away for an hour or two and stay in shape,” Charlie said. “You meet new friends and have the opportunity to play at a bunch of different levels.”
Despite losing the championship game in a heartbreaking penalty kick loss, the Real Meat team gained a wealth of experience, as well as a few inside jokes.
During the dramatic penalty kick finish, one of Real Meat’s shooters, Ian Geiger, kicked and missed over the crossbar, a pretty far miss for a penalty kick. While it was devastating at the time, the team now uses Geiger’s name whenever a player misses the net by a wide margin. In fact, when Le Moullac missed the net this season he was told he had “Geiger’d it.”
Real Meat is one of UCSB’s top tier Intramural soccer teams, but they realize that having fun is just as important as winning the championships.
“We play competitively and we’re out there to win, but we also want to have a good time,” Charlie said.
Keep an eye on Real Meat. They have currently won one game and tied another. Barring any “Geigers,” this team should make it far this season.
