Sports played with curved sticks have dated back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and other contemporaries of this civilization. What then seemingly evolved into field hockey laid the grounds for modern day ice hockey to develop in 19th century Canada, at the hands of British soldiers and immigrants. Roller or inline hockey then derived from this throughout the 20thcentury. The sport is played similar to ice hockey with some differences in rules being played on rollerblades or roller-skates. This affects the temperature of the facility being played in as ice is not needed and can even be played outside. Without the smoothness or the speed then of playing on an icy surface, the material for the puck or ball being played with is often lighter. This makes for a somewhat less physical game than ice hockey allowing for the hockey experience to reach more people.
Hockey is offered Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarter through the Recreational Sports Office.
