Intramural Sports Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are intramural sports?

The UCSB Intramural Sports program offers a wide variety of activities for all skill levels. Students have the opportunity to be part of a team and incorporate physical activity into their weekly routine - all while building new relationships and having a good time. Many students played sports at the high school or recreational level, and IM Sports affords the opportunity to stay active in sports without the time commitments or skill level of a division I or Sport Club athlete. Intramural We value the spirit of competition and strive to inspire growth of the mind, body, and spirit through fitness, community, and fair play.

  • What sports are offered?

We offer a large variety of sports. Major team sports include softball, outdoor and indoor soccer, flag football, basketball, floor hockey and volleyball. We also offer tennis, racquetball, bowling, golf, table tennis, waterpolo, innertube waterpolo, ultimate frisbee, badminton, and roller hockey.

  • When and where are the games played?

All of the UCSB Intramurals are played on campus except bowling, which is at Zodo’s, and golf, which is at Glenn Annie golf course. Some sports have multiple locations, dependent on the day of the game and the quarter of the year. League schedules note times and locations for all games. Team schedules can be found under respective team pages on gauchosplay.com or at the Recreational Sports Office (Room 1110).

  • When are final rosters due?

Rosters will be formed as each player checks into their games with a Recreational Sports staff member, usually set up at a table. Valid participants must show their UCSB access card, sign a waiver, and print their name on the roster. This process is done before each regular season game. After the third game, rosters will be LOCKED. No exceptions will be made due to injury throughout the season, so it’s important to have enough players to compete throughout the entire season.

  • I’m not a student at UCSB, can I still play?

If you are not a UCSB/SBCC student, you pay the same registration fee for the IM sport, but you are sanctioned to the requirements of entry for the venue of your sport (for example, paying for entry into the Recreational Center for sports held inside the Rec Cen).

  • What happens if we forfeit a game?

If your team does not show up for a game or does not have enough players to participate at game time (official time will be kept by the sports official on duty), and you have not called the Recreational Sports Office at least 24 hours in advance to notify the office staff, you are charged with a forfeit. The other team will receive the win, and your team will be charged a $15 fine for the first forfeit fee. If your team forfeits two games, not necessarily consecutively, your team will automatically be dropped from the league.

  • Where do I pay my forfeit fee?

Forfeit fees can be paid at the Recreational Center Room 1110 and can be paid with credit/debit card, cash, or check. If the forfeit fee is not paid by the end of the quarter, it will be charged to the team manager’s barc account.

  • How can I avoid the forfeit fee?

If you know that your team will not be able to make a game, the Captain must call the Recreational Sports Office (805-893-3908) at least 24 hours before the game to notify them. The team captains can contact one another to reschedule forfeited games if time permits. Your team will be charged with a loss, but not a forfeit fee.

  • How can I find out about game cancellation and rescheduling?

If you have any questions or concerns about cancellations or rescheduling, please call the Recreational Sports Office at (805) 893-3908. If one team cannot attend a game, their captain may call the other team’s captain to let them know and reschedule on a later date.

  • How much of my own equipment do I need to play any of the sports?

Intramurals provide equipment necessary to play most of its sports.  Please come wearing athletic clothing and bring your UCSB Access Card.  Without your access card you will not be allowed to participate.

  • Do I need ID for every game?

For the first three games of intramural sports, no ID is necessary. However, athletes MUST sign the team waiver within the first three games. The roster is locked after those three games, and then ID will be checked to match the name on the waiver. Picture identification checks occur before every Intramural Sports contest beginning after the third game. If a UCSB access card can not be presented, another form of picture ID is acceptable. Failure to provide an acceptable form of identification will result in not being allowed to participate in Intramural Sports that day. Absolutely no exceptions will be made.

  • What happens if I get injured during an intramural contest?

All of our intramural staff is equipped with ice and a first-aid box for minor injuries. Our staff is trained to handle all situations that may occur in regards to injuries. We always carry multiple walkie-talkies that can contact a medical official if a more serious injury occurs. Keep in mind that athletes play at their own risk, and Recreational Sports is not liable for any injuries.

  • What happens if I am ejected? suspended?

A participant who is determined too unruly (i.e. harassing officials, harassing members of opposing teams, etc.) by the Intramural Supervisors or Officials will be banned from playing for a period of time (depending on the offense). He/she must have a conduct review meeting before their next game. He/she will be contacted by the IM office and must meet with the Student Director(s) and/or the Coordinator of Intramurals to discuss the incident and determine the length of the ban. If the participant continues to play during the ban, the team that he/she is playing for will be removed from the league and/or the playoffs.

  • Where can I find the standings for my league?

League scores and each teams standings can be found in the Rec Cen room 1110 or at www.gauchosplay.com under respective league pages.

  • How will I know if my team has qualified for the playoffs?

The Recreational Staff member who coordinates your sport will notify the captain of your team if you have qualified for the playoffs. The coordinator will also tell your captain what day and times the games will be. Your captain is responsible for relaying the message to the rest of the teammates.

  • When do leagues begin each quarter?

League starting dates vary each quarter. Team managers will find out at the mandatory manager’s meeting what date games begins.

  • Where can I find intramural rules and the intramural handbook?

Rules for all sports are posted on www.gauchosplay.com, and there are rules and captain meetings before each season starts to familiarize you with the rules.

  • How do I join the Recreational Sports staff?

The success of our program is a direct result of student involvement. All men and women are encouraged to participate, not only at the competitive level, but also as staff members. Students are the front line employees of the Intramural Sports program. Intramural Sports job opportunities include supervisors, sports officials and event managers.
